Unicode, not Preeti

For years Nepal typed in Preeti, Kantipur and similar fonts. They work by drawing Nepali shapes over ordinary English keys, so a sentence typed in Preeti is really a string of English letters that only looks Nepali while that exact font is installed. Send it to someone without Preeti, paste it into a website, or search for it, and it falls apart.

Every font on this page is Unicode: the letters stored are real Devanagari, so your text reads correctly on any phone or computer, can be searched and copied, and works for both Nepali and Hindi. If you need to type Nepali with an English keyboard, use our Nepali typing tool.

Choosing a font

Sans serif fonts such as Mukta, Hind and Noto Sans Devanagari are clean and easy to read on screens and forms. Serif fonts such as Martel, Tiro Devanagari and Noto Serif Devanagari suit books, invitations and formal letters. Display and handwriting fonts — Yatra One, Rozha One, Kalam, Amita — are for headings, posters and wedding cards, not long paragraphs.

Frequently asked

Are these fonts free for commercial use?
Yes. Every font here is released under the SIL Open Font License, which lets you use it for personal and commercial work — wedding cards, posters, logos, websites, print — and share it, as long as you don't sell the font file itself.
Do these fonts work in Microsoft Word, Canva and Photoshop?
Yes. They are Unicode fonts, so text you type in Nepali or Hindi stays real Devanagari: it works in Word, Google Docs, Photoshop, Illustrator, Canva and on websites, and can be copied, searched and read by screen readers.
What is the difference between Unicode fonts and Preeti?
Preeti, Kantipur and similar fonts are legacy fonts that draw Nepali shapes over English letters, so the text is really English characters and turns into gibberish anywhere the font isn't installed. Unicode fonts store real Nepali letters, so the text reads correctly everywhere. Use Unicode for anything new.
How do I install a font?
Download the zip and open it. On Windows, right-click each .ttf file and choose Install (or Install for all users). On a Mac, double-click the file and press Install Font. Restart Word or Photoshop and the font appears in the font list.
