What HEIC is, and why it keeps failing

HEIC is the format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11. It genuinely is better than JPG — roughly half the file size for the same picture — which is why Apple switched. The problem is everything else. Chrome on Android and Windows cannot display HEIC, most Nepali government and bank portals reject it, and a lot of upload forms fail silently rather than telling you the format is wrong. People usually conclude their photo is too big or the site is broken.

Converting to JPG makes the photo universally readable. You lose the storage advantage, which does not matter for a document you are about to attach once.

Keep the size, or reduce it?

This page only changes the format and keeps every pixel. That is usually what you want when a form rejected the file type. If the form complained about the size instead, convert first and then run the result through the image compressor, which will bring it under 200KB or whatever the form demands. The compressor also reads HEIC directly, so you can skip this page entirely when you need both.

Frequently asked

Why will my iPhone photo not upload?
Since iOS 11 iPhones save photos as HEIC instead of JPG. HEIC is a newer, smaller format, but most Nepali government portals, bank KYC systems and job sites only accept JPG or PNG — and many simply fail without explaining why. Converting the photo to JPG fixes it.
Does converting to JPG lose quality?
There is a single re-encode to JPG at high quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original on a photo or document. The pixel dimensions are kept exactly as they were — this tool does not shrink your photo.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The HEIC file is decoded inside your browser on your own device and never sent to Lami or any other server.
Does this work on Android and Windows?
Yes, and that is the point. Chrome on Android and Windows cannot open HEIC at all, so these files are often unusable once they leave the iPhone. This tool brings its own decoder, so it works regardless of what your device supports.
How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC in the first place?
On the iPhone open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC, so you will still need to convert those.
