Why traditional Nepali units still matter
Land in Nepal is bought, sold, and inherited in Ropani and Bigha — the Malpot (land revenue) office prints them on every Lalpurja. Wedding gold is negotiated in Tola. Rice and grain still move in Mana and Pathi in much of the country. But banks, engineers, and international listings all use square feet, grams, and litres — so every family ends up converting back and forth. Nepali land units — hilly vs Terai
Nepal uses two parallel land systems. The Ropani system (Ropani → Aana → Paisa → Daam, each step dividing by 16, 4, and 4) is used in Kathmandu Valley and the hills. The Bigha system (Bigha → Kattha → Dhur, dividing by 20 and 20) is used across the Terai:
